a little backyard yogis check-in + an ask.
hi friends,
i saw a post this week from Community Fest Jamaica about the disappearing queer spaces and third spaces around us. they talked about how these spaces don’t disappear because people stop needing them. they disappear because the money required to keep them open doesn’t always match the amount of love in the room. oof.
AND we are so, so fortunate that KBY has not only survived the last five years, but grown. we’re almost 10(plus)x the size we were when this started in my backyard. and for five years there has been consistent community here. you keep showing up. seriously. thank you.
similarly to every small business owner i know, our margins are also thinner than they’ve been in past septembers. sales are down about 20% over the last 30 days and we still have a ways to go to break even this month.
and everything is fucking expensive. everyone i know is budgeting and making choices and trying to make things work. so this is absolutely not me asking anyone to spend money they don’t have. we also aren’t going to solve that by pricing people out. it actually goes against everything we are trying to do here. we want to pay our instructors fairly (and more, someday). we want to keep the pantry stocked and the tea and refreshments free. we want sliding scale pricing with an even wider range. we want someone to be able to come here even when money is tight. we want our classes to remain significantly less expensive than most yoga studios in town because being a community space doesn’t mean much if the community can’t afford to be in it.
so. if you do have a little room in your budget and you’ve been meaning to come back, try something new, bring somebody with you, or sign up for an event…this is a really good week to do it.
bring a friend and they can get $5 off our 2 Week Notice intro offer with code bringafriend
if there’s an event you’ve been thinking about, buy the ticket. use spookypookie for $5 off any event. or just come to a class this week.
also! the Backyard Yogis app is officially live in the Google Play Store. no more invite code (!!). Apple is still reviewing us, so iPhone friends…hang tight. hopefully very soon.
five years in, i still believe the same thing i did when people started showing up in my backyard. we do this together or not at all. thank you for continuing to do it with us.
take care,
shelby + kby
